Thousands of medical records found in auctioned storage unit
pMEMPHIS Tenn WMC Thousands of medical records containing sensitive patient information were discovered in a Memphis storage unit that went up for auction after the owner failed to pay rent for three monthsppJason Lederfine who buys storage units as a hobby found the records on Monday after acquiring a unit through auction The records belonged to Dr Ajay Dave a former Memphis dentist whose license expired in 2023ppI opened up the door and there was a wheelchair inside I immediately saw boxes and I opened them up and it looked like file folders which looked like patient records Lederfine said I see her medical records her Xrays I see patient intake forms I found billing records with the patients billing information social security numbersppLederfine contacted the state licensing office which referred him to the Memphis Police Department According to MPD the storage unit owner had not paid rent for three months before it went to auctionppPolice have since locked the unit until further notice as part of their investigationppThis wasnt one or two files this was thousands of thousands of files Lederfine said And it really opened my eyes to how unsecure these peoples information wasppAction News 5 visited Daves last known office location where staff confirmed he previously practiced but was no longer there The office on Park Avenue is now home to an optometrist ppWhen contacted by phone Daves wife hung up after being asked about the recordsppThe Tennessee Department of Health has not responded to requests for comment about the incidentppLederfine said after he posted a warning to former patients on social media the doctor paid what was due for the unitppIt is still not clear if Dave will keep those records sitting in the storage unit ppClick here to sign up for our newsletterppClick here to report a spelling or grammar error Please include the headlineppCopyright 2025 WMC All rights reservedp
