[Economist Reporter Jeong Doo-yong] Concerns have become reality.

As soon as Samsung Electronics allowed the use of ChatGPT in its device solution (DS/semiconductor) business premises, an accident occurred in which corporate information was leaked. The contents of programs related to semiconductor 'facility measurement' and 'yield/defect' were entered as learning data for American companies. Samsung Electronics is considering building its own artificial intelligence (AI) service exclusively for the company under the supervision of the Innovation Center, an organization within DS, to fundamentally prevent such accidents.

According to the coverage of this magazine on the 30th, it was confirmed that there were three incidents of entering Samsung Electronics corporate information into ChatGPT. At OpenAI, a US startup, employees check the contents of questions entered into ChatGPT and use it as 'learning data'. If corporate secrets are entered in the question, the contents can be leaked to an unspecified number of people. OpenAI is also notifying 'Do not enter sensitive information' through the chat GPT usage guide. Samsung Electronics has been blocking the use of ChatGPT in its workplaces out of concern about leaks of internal confidential information that could occur in such a structure.

However, from the 11th, the DS division permitted the use of ChatGPT. The device experience sector (DX, mobile and home appliances) still prohibits the use of ChatGPT. The permission to use ChatGPT in the DS division is a measure in response to the need for all executives and employees to be aware of technological changes. Semiconductors are a key element in building generative AI. The company only permitted the use of ChatGPT and issued a notice to its executives and employees to "be careful about internal information security and do not enter private information."

In less than 20 days after the DS division changed its operating policy, the 'internal information leakage' accident that was concerned about occurred. The contents of the accident identified by Samsung Electronics are '2 cases of leakage of equipment information' and '1 case of leakage of meeting contents'. After recognizing the fact, the company applied 'emergency measures', such as limiting the upload capacity to 1024 bytes per question. The executives and staff involved in the corporate information leakage accident will be investigated and, if necessary, disciplinary action will be taken.

An employee of Samsung Electronics' DS division confirmed an error while executing the source code of the semiconductor facility measurement database (DB) download program. I copied all of the problematic source code, entered it into ChatGPT, and inquired about a solution. In other words, the source code related to Samsung Electronics facility measurement was entered as open AI learning data.

Employee B caused an accident by entering the program code written to identify yield and defective equipment into ChatGPT. He entered all relevant sources into Chat GPT and requested code optimization. Employee C converted the contents of the meeting recorded on his smartphone into a document file through the Naver Clova application (app) and then entered it into ChatGPT. The purpose is to request the preparation of meeting minutes.

Samsung Electronics notified executives and employees of this information and asked them to be careful about using ChatGPT. Through an internal notice, the company said, “As soon as content is entered into ChatGPT, data is transmitted and stored to an external server, making it impossible for the company to retrieve it.” can be provided,” he said.

Samsung Electronics is preparing protective measures to prevent the recurrence of information leakage through ChatGPT. The company informed its executives and employees, “If a similar accident occurs even after emergency information protection measures are taken, access to ChatGPT may be blocked on the company network.”

A Samsung Electronics official said to a reporter who asked about the information leakage accident, "It is difficult to confirm because it is an internal matter of the company."

On the other hand, Samsung Electronics believes that the semiconductor ecosystem can change according to generative AI, and is urging management to respond. On the 22nd of last month, an online seminar was held for all executives on the subject of 'The emergence of ChatGPT, the future created by generative AI'. Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee emphasized the importance of ChatGPT and the need to increase understanding of generative AI.
